YOKOSUKA, Japan - Girl Scouts from Girl Scout Troop 16 based in Yokosuka joined more than 100 Japanese Girl Scouts to march in the annual Kamakura parade, April 14. This is the second year the American scouts were a part of the parade.

“The Girls Scouts of Japan have participated in the Kamakura parade for many years but for the last two years they have reached out and invited us to join them in the parade,” said Lindsey Lange, scout mom. “Last year, the first year we were in the parade, was great. They girls had a lot of fun and we are looking to have another great time this year.”

Troop 16 has about 20 scouts most of whom are younger and belong to the Girl Scout groups Daisies, Brownies and Junior Girl Scouts. Together with the Japanese scouts, they walked up one of the main streets in Kamakura traveling about a mile from a school up to Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū, the main shrine for the city.

“I think they were really well received, people seemed really excited to see the scouts in the parade,” said Lange. “It’s always awesome to be able to do scouting in Japan. It’s a really unique experience that I don’t think we would be able to have if we were anywhere else. The scouts are happy whenever they get to bond with the Japanese scouts and the Japanese culture through events like this.”

While walking, Girl Scouts from Troop 16 sang a scouting song and waved American flags above their heads as onlookers cheered and clapped. The song that the girls learned to sing in English and Japanese was about being a girl scout.

“The people seemed to enjoy and appreciate the importance of having children from both countries participating in the parade,” said Linda Meo, Troop 16 leader. “It gives them a sense of cooperation and understanding of another culture, it’s an invaluable lesson for them to learn.”

The Japanese Girl Scouts celebrated 51 years since they joined the World Association of Girl Scouts and were happy to share their anniversary with their American counterparts.

“It was exciting to be in the parade and to have the American scouts join us,” said Saori Shinomi, Girl Scouts of Kanagawa troop leader. “We were happy to share in the fun and build friendships.”
