BISMARCK, N.D. - A change of responsibility ceremony Saturday will honor the North Dakota National Guard's outgoing state command chief warrant officer and welcome his replacement.

Chief Warrant Officer 5 David Jundt will retire from the position after 42 years of service, and Chief Warrant Officer 4 Shelly Sizer will become the first woman to fill that role in the state.

Warrant officers are considered the Army's technical experts in work, training and education. The 2:30 p.m. May 4 event at the Raymond J. Bohn Armory in Bismarck will ceremoniously pass the leadership role from Jundt to Sizer, who will now be the highest level warrant officer in the state.

Jundt, of Bismarck, joined the North Dakota Army National Guard May 10, 1971, as a construction equipment mechanic with the former 816th Engineer Company Support Equipment Company.

He served in several maintenance roles in different units and rose to the rank of sergeant first class before becoming a chief warrant officer two in October 1985. He was one of the last Guardsmen to receive a direct appointment as a warrant officer. Before being named the state's second state command chief warrant officer in April 2005, he served with the Command Maintenance Evaluation Team, known as the COMET.

Beyond his career as a traditional Guardsman, Jundt also served full-time in the Guard from December 1988 until his retirement as a federal technician this past March.

Sizer, of Bismarck, enlisted in 1978, serving in the personnel section of the former Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 141st Engineer Combat Battalion in Valley City, N.D. She advanced to the rank of staff sergeant before transferring to the former Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment of the 231st Engineer Battalion in Bismarck, where she was promoted to the rank of warrant officer. She served at the Regional Training Institute in Devils Lake, N.D., before returning to Bismarck in 2000. She deployed to Kosovo in 2010.

Sizer, who has served 18 years as a full-time federal technician with the Guard, is the resilience, risk reduction and suicide prevention manager for the North Dakota Army National Guard.
