CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - With more than 400 people in attendance this year, more than 60 colleges attended the National Job Fair an Education Expo at the Marston Pavilion aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune April 18.
For Marines who are getting out, the colleges at the fair give them a head start at college opportunities. The fair and expo opened its doors to retirees, service member’s families, Department of Defense employees of both Camp Lejeune, as well Marine Corps Air Station New River and Coastal Carolina college students.
“The resources and services they have available are better than they were before,” said Peter Harris, retired master sergeant and Marine Corps Community Services education chief. “Once people see it they’ll take advantage of it.”
The education expo and job fair has improved since its beginning in 2001 as a single fair with only 10 colleges. Marine Corps Community Services is slated to hold another fair this fall.
“We’re part of a team,” said Rick Bowman, an education counselor and united services Military Apprenticeship Program representative. “Everyone played an important role in making this happen, but I’m glad to see the services and resources available to Marines and anyone interested.”
Along with education opportunities, the job fair included representatives from more than 90 companies across the United States. The education branch organized the event to begin the process between the college or institute and possible applicant.
“There are a lot of avenues they can take to reach their education goals,” said Harris. “They just have to take the first step. This is all about having access to needed resources.”
