Story by Senior Master Sgt. George Thompson

UNDISCLOSED LOCATION - When the son of a family friend of over 15 years was diagnosed with cancer, one deployed airman came up with an idea to show his support.

"Noah was a pretty good size 8th grader playing football when he developed some pain in his legs last fall," said Staff Sgt. Gary Godby, 386th Expeditionary Civil Engineering Squadron.

The pain in Noah's legs was Osteosarcoma, a type of cancer that often starts near the ends of the long bones in the legs, especially in the part of the thigh bone next to the knee, and the part of the lower leg bone next to the knee.

"He's been doing chemotherapy and radiation treatment and a couple of weeks ago they decided not to amputate his leg, but this week he's supposed to have a knee replacement," he said.

Godby learned about Noah's condition after his wife found out over Facebook what Noah's father Guy Laman did to show his support.

"His dad shaved his head when his son did and I thought it would be kind of neat if we could do the same thing here to lift his spirits," he said.

Godby passed the idea by coworkers within the civil engineering squadron, but quickly learned other Marauders were willing to shave their heads to support Noah.

"The mission support group commander said he'll shave his head when he returns and it's pretty cool that a full bird colonel will shave his head for a kid he doesn't even know," he said.

When it was all said and done more than 85 Marauders shaved their heads to support Noah.

"This will let him know that even though we are serving our country over here, we're supporting him and we love him," Godby said.
