SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. - Volunteers from the 4th Fighter Wing participated in a World Book Night, April 23, 2013.

During this event, airmen who visited the base dining facility were encouraged to take one of seven free books that were donated to Team Seymour.

"(The volunteers) have chosen books that each have read and were interested in, that way we can let airmen know about the book and why we found it interesting,” said Tech. Sgt. Andrew Hawley, volunteer and 4th Logistics Readiness Squadron vehicle management noncommissioned officer in charge of customer service.

World Book Night is a campaign that originated in Europe to give away specially printed books donated by authors and publishers, on or around William Shakespeare’s birthday. Volunteer book lovers will help spread the joy of reading by handing out books in their communities. Local volunteers will disperse books in Veterans Affairs hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, ballparks and diners.

"I love reading, and it’s a good way to honor Shakespeare and get people into reading," said Teriece Hawley, volunteer and daughter of Andrew.

Team Seymour volunteers, along with 20,000 others nationwide, planned to hand out half-a-million books in one day.

“I want airmen to learn that you don’t always have to read for work,” Andrew said. “I hope they find something in one of these books that sparks their interest and keeps them reading.”
