    19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

DAEGU, South Korea – Soldiers and department of defense civilians from the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command wore denim at work April 19 to support Denim Day.

Denim Day is a movement that encourages people to wear denim in order to raise awareness of rape and sexual assault. It was triggered by the ruling of the Italian Supreme Court to overturn a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans too tight for the attacker to remove.

“Denim Day is important because it brings awareness to sexual assault and lets victims know that we are standing behind them. They will realize that there are always people who understand the situation and are willing to help them as advocates,” said Sgt. 1st Class Judy L. Woods, the 19th ESC Area IV sexual assault response coordinator.

As a part of the Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Denim Day also showed the strong will of leaders to educate soldiers in order to eradicate the sexual assault and harassment from the unit by participating in the movement.

“I feel like it is something that we need to support for sexual assault prevention month and it conveys the message saying, ‘Hey, we are supporting the sexual assault prevention.’ If your soldiers see that you are supporting the good cause, they are most likely to join in and support it also,” said 1st Sgt. Yolanda Y. Brown, the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 19th ESC first sergeant.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month focused on preventing sexual assault by educating the people of Area IV.
