MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. - At Quantico Middle/High School there are many international students who hail from different cultures that many students born in America know little about. To raise cultural awareness more than 100 students, parents and staff attended the school’s 2013 International Night aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico on April 19 to be exposed to other cultures.

There were more than three dozen cultures represented that night and through three demonstrations: Exploration of Culture, Culture through Performances and Tastes of the World.

During the Exploration of Culture there were slide shows and displays from Germany, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago; a Chinese Yo-Yo demonstration and popular tunes from other countries. Tastes of the World offered dishes that reached to the farthest parts of the globe, including France’s crepes to Jamaican porridge.

This was a chance for students to learn from and mingle with people from other cultures as well.

“I came here to simply have fun,” said Jacob, 16. “I didn’t realize how amazing this event was actually going to be. I have learned so much in only 90 minutes and there is still so much more to see, hear and take part in. I’m glad that I didn’t miss out.”

After sampling different types of food and spending some extra energy dancing, everyone adjured to the auditorium where students performed songs in Japanese; watched Mexican folk dances by Amor Al Arte, a local Hispanic Heritage club; a Fan and Lion Dance, and much more.

“According to the feedback from the parents and students, the event was a success and I would like to thank the parents and students who supported the event,” said Jeneva Mitchell, Spanish teacher and lead organizer for the event. “Without them, none of this would have been possible.”
