MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. – While stationed at Minot Air Force Base, airmen encounter many challenges, all while supporting the essential mission of nuclear deterrence.

“In addition to our operations tempo and extreme climate, I have seen airmen deal with many other issues such as the loss of a loved one, a major financial setback, a failed relationship, a difficult co-worker, an unexpected parenting challenge and many other things,” said Cynthia Whitesell, 5th Bomb Wing community support coordinator.

While the climate here is a major obstacle, airmen and their families can rest assured they have the proper support and resources to advance resiliency, which is defined as the ability to withstand, recover and grow in the face of stressors and changing demands, according to Whitesell.

"Resiliency is working through challenges together, taking advantage of the resources available to us and achieving optimal performance by building and reinforcing skills in four domains: mental, physical, social and spiritual," said Brig. Gen. C.K. Hyde, 86th Airlift Wing commander, to the Airmen of Ramstein Air Base.

Currently there are many programs in place to facilitate resiliency in airmen, as well as to ensure the mission continues.

“The Air Force is focused on building a culture of improved resilience and wellbeing, which results in optimal performance and growth,” said Whitesell. “We are launching skill-building training at all levels of the Air Force for every airman.”

With the Air Force actively building resilient airmen, units need to focus on building their people from the inside out.

“Unit leadership teams are seeing the positive impact of providing a variety of resources in a variety of venues to teach airmen the value of the Comprehensive Airman Fitness pillars, not only to enhance mission readiness, but also personal readiness,” said Whitesell. “Leaders are actively engaging with Airmen at all levels and Airmen respond positively to that interaction.”

It’s not only the unit’s responsibility to stay resilient through challenges faced in the shop, but in the Airman’s private life as well.

“Actively seek out resources to build and improve your capability to persevere and grow in the face of challenge and adversity,” Whitesell advised Airmen.

Minot is one of the Air Force’s more challenging bases, but also one of the most rewarding if airmen are resilient and use teamwork to get through tough times.

The Air Force is proactively committed to the health and well-being of each and every individual. It is the individual’s responsibility to seek the proper health and guidance to make them a better wingman to complete the very important mission airmen are charged with today.
