FORWARD OPERATING BASE SHANK, Afghanistan – The U.S. Army is rooted in traditions that have been honored for many years. The Command Sergeant Major of the 703rd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Mosier, understands the importance of honoring those traditions.

Twenty newly promoted noncommissioned officers were inducted into the noncommissioned officers corps, here, April 13.

The NCO induction ceremony celebrates the newly promoted individuals entering into the NCO corps and strives to place an emphasis on what it means to be a member of such an elite group.

Sgt. Ian Stuckert, a combat medic from Shrewsbury, Pa., came to the unit two years ago as a private and set a goal to be promoted to sergeant within two years. He received his coveted promotion in April and was honored to be inducted into the corps during his first combat tour. “The NCO induction, to me, was a key event in the transformation from soldier to leader,” said Stuckert.

The ceremony also paid tribute to the men and women who have served the NCO corps in the past. There is a deep sense of honor and tradition within the corps as well as a sense of what it takes to be an NCO in today’s Army.

Command Sgt. Maj. Alan Hummel, the Command Sergeant Major for the 4th Infantry Brigade’s Combat Team, was invited to be the guest speaker at the ceremony and asked the sergeants to help him uphold standards and discipline the past NCOs worked so hard to instill within the corps.

Command Sgt. Maj. Mosier conducted many NCO induction ceremonies in the past and wanted to ensure the tradition was upheld during the unit’s current deployment. “It is important for young NCOs to experience and honor Army traditions that symbolize the passing from a soldier to a leader. It is our job to make the time for them to experience these traditions,” he said.
