CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - Service members strive to constantly improve themselves and for one Marine with Licensing, Combat Logistics Battalion 1, Combat Logistics Regiment 1, 1st Marine Logistics Group, it’s his life’s ambition.
Corporal Levester Markham II, a motor transportation operator and a licensing instructor, extensively trains Marines on how to operate Mine-Resistant, Ambush-Protected Vehicles and Mine-Resistant, Ambush-Protected All-Terrain Vehicles.
Markham was inspired to be a motor transportation operator by his uncle, who worked in motor transportation in the Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
“My uncle said it was a great job,” said Markham. “I was a military brat. I wanted a challenge. That’s why I chose the Marines.”
Markham’s work ethic goes beyond the three-week licensing course’s standard. Each student that goes through the course receives an in-depth, hands-on training experience.
“Markham is a strong [noncommissioned officer] and has stepped up as a leader and an instructor for licensing,” said 1st Lt. Alexander C. Niederbuhl, licensing officer with Licensing, CLB-1, CLR-1. “He has gone above our expectations.”
“Corporal Markham is an outstanding Marine,” said Cpl. Lydia Yankee, a licensing instructor with Licensing. “He will do anything to help make the learning experience easier for the students.”
Markham has learned the majority of what he knows from driving corpsmen and doctors in Afghanistan while deployed with Bravo Surgical Company, 1st Medical Battalion, at Forward Operating Base Payne from February to September 2012.
“He’s very patient and won’t hesitate to pass on knowledge from past experiences,” said Yankee.
At least 40 Marines each month are properly introduced and trained on how to operate MAT-Vs and MRAPs during the licensing course, thanks to the 27-year-old native of Fort Worth, Texas. Having properly trained operators at the wheel of these powerful vehicles gives deployed Marines a distinct advantage.
“Every Marine I license, I know has been trained thoroughly on these vehicles,” said Markham. “One day, that Marine’s life could depend on this training and that’s why I take so much pride in my job.”
Markham is also the lead licensing instructor for the Advisor Training Cell course. The course trains staff noncommissioned officers and officers.
“He takes charge of all ranks for the duration of this course,” said Sgt. Derek Desjardin, acting chief licensing instructor with Licensing. “He’s diligent with his work and takes a lot of pride in it.”
Markham continues to improve the classes taken by the students during the licensing course. Giving Marines the gift of unprecedented knowledge is his way of giving back.
“I definitely see how he continues to grow as a [noncommissioned officer] and a Marine,” said Desjardin. “The sky’s the limit for Cpl. Markham.”
