HERAT, Afghanistan - An orthopedics and traumatology surgeon and two nurses from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have reinforced the staff that serves in the Spanish led Role 2 Hospital of the Herat Forward Support Base (FSB) within Camp Arena, base of the Italian led command for Western Afghanistan.
The participation of the UAE personnel has been the result of an agreement between the Spanish Ministry of Defence and the UAE Armed Forces, signed at the beginning of this year, that seeks to enhance and strengthen the existing bilateral relationships through collaboration in the Defense sector and promotes cooperative activities in the logistics support field, based on the principles of independence, sovereignty and mutual benefits.
The primary task of the new medical team is to provide support to the Afghan National Army and to the Afghan National Police. Additionally, and within existing capabilities and means, they will provide medical treatment to Camp Arena local workers and other local population at risk in Regional Command West. Finally, they are also ready to provide mentoring and training for Afghan medical units at local facilities.
All Spanish and U.S. personnel serving in the Role 2 Hospital, together with its commander, Lt. Col. Juan Carlos García Murga, and the FSB Commander, Col. José De Andrés Cuadra, have welcomed the UAE personnel with a simple but significant ceremony, during which the UAE National Flag has been presented by Major Sultan Matar Ali Alkaabi. From now on this flag will stand together with Spain´s and USA's flags in the Hospital.
Major Alkaabi has expressed his confidence in the partnership, “a big opportunity that will bear a great deal of professional exchange for all involved”, he said.
