QALAH-YE NOW, Afghanistan – In the past few days, a total of 580 men of the Afghan National Army, National Police and Border Police, with the support of 165 Spanish soldiers of the Task Force "Azor 23" and some ISAF special assets, has led an important combined operation, called "Mazak 1," in the southern area of the Murghab Valley, known to be one of the territories where the insurgents presence is largest.
During the days of the operation, the troops - accessing from the road which comes from the town of Darra- I-Bum, where the Spanish forces, until last year, had the Hernan Cortes combat outpost - carried out a series of actions that ranged from the neutralization of some insurgents to the delivery of humanitarian assistance from the Spanish Civil-Military Cooperation Unit, and acquired the control of the dangerous PIWAR’s Valley.
The Spanish contingent in Afghanistan (ASPFOR XXXII) supports the Afghan Army movements in Badghis province and provides advice to the Afghan brigade who ran the operation, always leaving the initiative to it.
Also thanks to the Spanish support, the Afghan forces of the province, in just a few months, have acquired the capability to lead the actions against the insurgency, even in areas previously controlled by the rebels.
The operation "Mazak 1" showed the inhabitants of the Badghis province the progress of their national forces and its capability to reach any zone and represents a further step in the transition of the security responsibility.
