OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea - The 7th Air Force at Osan Air Base initiated Exercise Key Resolve, March 14.

Key Resolve is an annual combined and joint command post exercise that employs more than 3,000 U.S. military personnel from the Republic of Korea and the United States, as well as ROK air force.

"Exercise Key Resolve is a critical exercise in strengthening the readiness of combined ROK and U.S. forces," said U.S. Army Gen. James Thurman, Combined Forces Command commander, in a public statement announcing the exercise.

"This year is particularly important because it is the first time the ROK Joint Chiefs of Staff [JCS] have planned and executed this combined exercise," Thurman said. "In doing so, they are taking great strides to assume wartime operational control of forces in Dec. 2015."

While the overall exercise is led this year by the ROK JCS, the air component is headquartered at Osan Air Base and is led by U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Jan-Marc Jouas, 7th Air Force commander. Jouas and the combined ROK-U.S. staff are responsible for providing air support and capabilities to the Korean peninsula.

Col. David Avila, 7th Air Force operations and plans director, held a command staff briefing and received status reports from various units participating in the exercise.

"There [are things] we're going to cover in this exercise that we haven't covered in previous exercises," Avila said. "Because a lot of this is territory we haven't treaded, there's going to be a lot of requirement to use best judgment and make the best decision you can."

Active duty, guard and reserve service members working alongside ROKAF personnel improves the capacity of the ROK-U.S. Alliance to deter aggression and to reinforce the United States' commitment to the Republic of Korea.

The United Nations Command notified the North Korean military Feb. 21 of the exercise dates and that Key Resolve is an annual ROK-U.S. combined exercise that is not related to current events on the Korean peninsula.

Training exercises such as Key Resolve highlight the longstanding partnership and enduring friendship between UNC sending state nations, help ensure peace and security on the peninsula, and reaffirm the U.S. commitment to the region.
