    3rd Division Sustainment Brigade

KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan— Soldiers gathered together at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, to pay their respects and honor a fallen comrade during a memorial ceremony, March 13.

Spc. Cody D. Suggs, 22, of West Alexandria, Ohio, died March 7 at Kandahar Airfield, as a result of a non-combat incident. He was assigned to the 1487th Transportation Company, Ohio National Guard, which is currently attached to the 495th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, Task Force Provider.

Suggs, a motor transport operator and a gunner assigned to provide quick reaction force security in southern Afghanistan, was described by his company commander as a great soldier with a good sense of humor.

“He was the kind of person that would make everyone laugh,” said Capt. Stephen Sturgill. “Many of his friends have told me he could make them all laugh and cheered them up in difficult times.”

One such friend, Spc. Matthew Wentlender, has known Suggs since the two attended elementary school.

“Over the years, from kindergarten up through graduation, we became very close,” said Wentlender during the memorial ceremony, adding that Suggs inspired him to join the U.S. Army in 2009.

“Right after he signed up, he brought me to the recruiter to check it out. I enlisted two weeks after he did. He was one of the main reasons why I joined.”

Wentlender continued to say that his friend was a hardworking soldier who cared for others.

“He was always willing to step up to get the job done,” Wentlender said. “Cody would give freely of himself for other people. He was always there for anyone who needed a helping hand.”

Wentlender asked that his fellow 1487th TC soldiers cherish the memories they’ve made with Suggs and celebrate the life that he led.

“We shared great times,” he said. “We still have a job to complete. Let us honor Cody’s memory by doing that job to the best of our abilities.”

Suggs is survived by his mother, Wendy; father, Brian and sister, Taylor.
