    Story by Ross Adkins

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District

TULSA, Okla. - A group of 12 Tulsa District emerging leaders completed a yearlong Leadership Development Program culminating in a graduation ceremony to commemorate their achievement.

The group, lead by Real Estate Chief Mark Moore, represented nearly every office in the district. One of the frequently mentioned take-a-ways repeated by the graduates was the diversity of things the district does.

“I work in the Planning and Environmental Division and by spending time in other offices; I discovered the District does a lot more than just Planning and Environmental work. A Lot more,” one of the graduates, Tyler Henry quipped. That sentiment was repeated by almost all of the graduates.

The students received a very broad but intensive introduction to every facet of District life. Their training included field trips to learn about military construction, hydropower, and lake operations and a trip to the port of Catoosa for a briefing by Port Director Bob Portiss. There they learned about stakeholders and how they play a key role in the navigation systems success.

Commenting on the program, Moore said, “The Tulsa District’s Leadership Development Program is the commander’s program. Under the direct leadership of Col. Teague, Tulsa District’s program has become one of best in the region. It is designed to meet all of the requirements established by USACE and more. In addition to exposing our leadership program participants to our Civil Works and Military Programs and our senior leaders, we also focus on building relationships between the participants who are, themselves, a very diverse group of people representing a good cross segment of the district’s functions and activities. These relationships, in many cases will last for their entire careers. Participants are required to think out of the box and are exposed to the concepts of critical thinking, along with a number of other requirements that must be met before being considered for graduation.”

Amanda Palmer, Peer Mentor and an earlier LDP graduate, works with Moore in organization of the program and keeping the students training on track. She said, “If you’re looking to enter a future LDP class prepare yourself for a very intense program that is a lot of extra hard work, but worth every extra minute of your time. “
