MAZAR-E SHARIF, Afghanistan – German Army Maj. Gen. Jörg Vollmer assumed command of the International Security Assistance Force Regional Command North from Maj. Gen. Erich Pfeffer at a change of command ceremony at Camp Marmal Feb. 21.
The commander of ISAF Joint Command, U.S. Army Lt. Gen. James L. Terry, was the guest speaker and presided over the change of command. Members of the German Contingent to ISAF, as well as numerous international and Afghan guests attended the ceremony.
Maj. Gen. Pfeffer, was previously the commander of 13th Mechanized Infantry Division in Leipzig, Germany, and assumed command of RC-North and the German soldiers of the ISAF contingent on Feb. 26, 2012.
Maj. Gen. Pfeffer said he is satisfied with the achievements and is cautiously optimistic with regard to the further development in northern Afghanistan. “One year ago I could not imagine that 12 months later we would be able to achieve so the security situation as it is today.”
Maj. Gen. Vollmer had previously served as the RC-North commander in 2009 and will serve at the RC-North commander for the next 12 months. “I am looking forward to the new task and the renewed cooperation with my Afghan friends and partners. We shall work together side-by-side to help Afghanistan on the road to a peaceful and successful future. Our most important task will be to support the Afghan Security Forces in maintaining security in the future.”
