Slovakians, Afghans and coalition forces: Working together for sustainable and transferrable capabilities

    KABUL, AFGHANISTAN

    U.S. Special Operations Command Europe

KABUL, Afghanistan – Slovakian army special operations forces soldiers from the 5th Special Forces Regiment of Jozef Gabcik, who are partnered and working together here with Afghan special police units and coalition forces to build sustainable, transferable capabilities, received a special visit from the Slovak army chief of operations, Col. Daniel Zmeko, recently.

The Slovakian special operations forces soldiers, who arrived here over four months ago, are working to clear the way, shoulder to shoulder, as part of a multinational, special operations forces task force in eastern Afghanistan for the coming transition to independent Afghans operations.

The Afghan special police units they are mentoring specialize in civil order security and high-risk arrests.

The Slovakian special operations forces trained extensively for their current mission, to include spending four weeks training with a U.S. Special Forces ODA (Operational Detachment Alpha), within Slovakia in order to prepare.

The Slovakian army chief of operations, Col. Zmeko, traveled to eastern Afghanistan recently and accompanied Slovakian SOF soldiers on a recent operation in order see and assess, first-hand, the situation on the ground.

“This is not the first time troops from Slovakia have performed these types of missions …in Kosovo we also worked to bring this capability to our partners,” said Col. Daniel.

Zmeko went on to say, “I was very happy with what I saw, as the Afghan SPU continues to grow in capability with the help from all of us…Slovak and the entire coalition, alike.”

With continued advising and mentoring from Slovakian special operations forces and their coalition partners, ANSF units and special police units in particular will continue to grow in their ability to secure the future of the Afghan people and the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
