ZABUL PROVINCE, Afghanistan – As the sun burns off the morning haze, Afghan National Army soldiers of the Second Battalion Mobile Strike Force prepare for their first mission. Pride mixed with nervousness as they left the safety of their base

The First Company, Second Battalion Mobile Strike Force (MSF), 205th Corps, Afghan National Army (ANA), performed their first route reconnaissance of Highway One in the Zabul Province, Feb. 17.

“This was my first mission outside of base, and I feel proud to help protect our country and our people,” said Shir Mohammad of First Platoon, First Company, who has proudly served in the Army for one year and five days. “Doing this mission we are learning the area and making the people of Afghanistan feel safe and proud.”

Dozens of civilians and Afghan Policeman were taking photos and videos of the Army’s new vehicles in every village the patrol passed through.

As observers, U.S. soldiers witnessed frequent dismounts and many other positive indicators of the ANA’s training.

“The soldiers of the ANA were attentively scanning during the patrol and when dismounted. Their engineers were systematically searching for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Everything that coalition forces taught them was being done,” said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Casey Johnson, Arrow Troop, Second Squadron, First Cavalry Regiment, Second Infantry Division, Combined Task Force Raider.

Johnson also said, “We were really impressed with how the ANA performed today. You can really tell how much they have been working. (The ANA are) learning from us, we have learned a lot from them, all-in-all a good mission.”

With sweat-covered brows and hearts still racing, the 2nd MSF drove back onto base one vehicle at a time; each soldier with their spirits and confidence lifted by a job well done.
