MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. The Quantico Middle/High School Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Teams have been on winning streaks lately with the boys going 11-7 and the girls have a 10-11 record.
On Friday, both teams were determined to keep their streaks alive against the Holy Family Academy boys’ and girls’ Vendeens teams during senior night at Quantico.
“Both teams have definitely improved over the season,” said Trent, Warriors player. “We are on a roll right now as our bond grows and our chemistry on the court gets that much better.”
The Lady Warriors won their last game against the St. Michael the Archangel High School Warriors on Feb. 14. The Lady Warriors showed no mercy winning that game at home, 58-27. The boys’ varsity team was also able to beat the St. Michael the Archangel High School Warriors team, 60-42.
During Friday’s game, the Vendeens held the Lady Warriors in the first quarter, but the rest of the game belonged to the Lady Warriors. With back-to-back fast breaks, several steals and the ability to shut down the Vendeens’ defense, the Lady Warriors easily took the win, 53-25.
After winning four out of five of their previous games, the boys’ varsity team, were ready and willing to make quick work of their opponents.
“This has happened every year for the last three years,” said Eddie Cottrell, head coach, Warriors. “We start out rough and it seems to be a hassle to get things going. But when they understand what I need them to do, they work harder and jelled as a team.
They really start believing in the reason that they are on the court; to win games.”
The Warriors struggled during the early stages of the game. The Vendeens weren’t looking to lose this one as easily as their sister team did early that night. The Warriors pulled a strong double digit lead throughout the first half, but the Vendeens managed to close the gap to within a couple of points.
In the second half, the Warriors broke through the Vendeens’ defense and made multiple 3-point shots. This sent the Vendeens into a downward spiral as frustration turned into panic with little time left in the game to make a stand.
With help from their key players, Anthony, with 17 points, and Naiko, with 23 points, the Warriors won the game, 59-46.
“Both teams are competing with teams that are their size or larger,” said Paul Roy, head coach, Lady Warriors. “They continue to play hard and keep their fighting spirit. And, whether they win or lose, after every game, the coaches tell me that Quantico played them harder than any other team. As coaches, there is nothing more we could ask for.”
