MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - Sgt. Maj. Johnny L. Higdon Jr. relinquished the role of Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron 302 sergeant major to Sgt. Maj. Kenneth L. Redemacher during a relief and appointment ceremony at the squadron’s hangar, Feb. 8.

Higdon has been the squadron sergeant major for two years.
“His success is a direct reflection for his need to lead the Marines,” said Lt. Col. Richard F. Neitzey, commanding officer of HMHT-302. “Part of our job here is to train young officers and he accomplished that mission. We thank him for everything he’s done.”

“It’s been an honor and a pleasure to complete the command team for HMHT-302,” said Higdon.

During the relief and appointment ceremony, Higdon paused to thank the Marines under his command.

“It was my first time being exposed to the wing element,” said Higdon. “I thank you for your professionalism, as well as juggling everything that the command thought important, as well as keeping these birds in the air so I thank you for that.”

Redemacher arrived to Marine Corps Air Station New River from Advanced Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry-East.

Addressing those who were in attendance at the ceremony, Redemacher explained his first impression of the squadron.

“I’ve had the opportunity to come down and see the squadron for the last couple days and my impression of you is nothing less than stellar,” said Redemacher. “I look forward to being the sergeant major of this squadron.”

Redemacher in his first message to the Marines of HMHT-302 offered words of encouragement and assurance.

“I look forward to going with you and being your senior enlisted advisor,” said Redemacher. “If I perform my duties half as well as Sgt. Maj. Higdon, then I’m sure we’ll be fine, I look forward to serving with you.”
