NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Clay Askew, a Lock Electrician at Wilson Lock and a previous lock electrician at the Guntersville Lock within the Nashville District, is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Employee of the Month for December 2012.

Askew is recognized for his significant contributions as an electrical specialist. During a recent personnel shortage of electricians at Guntersville and Pickwick Locks, Askew was called upon to make key repairs at both locations. He responded on several callouts to troubleshoot problems, provide maintenance and solve equipment failures.

“I really enjoy doing this job and everyday try to give my best,” said Askew.

Askew assisted, and trained numerous employees with less experience and recently provided emergency assistance during an emergency. His quick thinking and timely decision to apply a temporary fix to a valve allowed a vessel locking through the Navigation chamber to complete a lockage at the time of failure.

While his quick thinking resulted in a minimal delay to navigation, Askew followed up the next day during normal working hours and made final repairs to restore normal operation. This quick action and can do attitude is demonstrated everyday in the performance of his duties.

Gerald Choate, Nashville District supervisor facilities operations specialist, said Askew’s skill sets are a valuable asset to the contracting office and his hard work contributes to the success of his peers and the office.

“Clay is the type of guy who will work hard all day and never complain.” said Choate. “He is quiet but gets the work done with or without you.”

Askew’s can do attitude and willingness to go the extra distance to get the job done influences his peers and employees throughout the district. He is a highly respected employee who is regularly called upon for his experience and knowledge in the electrical field.

“He is a nice guy, works hard and seems to know how to do almost everything around here,” said Office Assistant, Kylie Corum.

Askew, has helped at Guntersville and Wheeler Locks on various special projects during the past few months. He installed the new Lock Operation Management Application helping them view and stay aware of all commercial traffic on the river. Using his expertise, he has also ensured that all electrical maintenance has been completed at all Locks in the Middle Tennessee River Area.

According to Lt. Col. James A. DeLapp, Nashville District commander, Askew is an outstanding electrician who values his expertise as an employee, equips others through his training and is committed to the Nashville District’s mission.

Askew is married to his wife Rachel and they have two children, Payton and Daniel. During his free time he enjoys remodeling houses and rebuilding old cars. He said spending time at his children’s sports games is also a favorite thing to do.

“I am very appreciative of the attention and award,” said Askew. The award is humbling and he contributes his on-the-job success to his apprenticeship training.

DeLapp adds that Askew’s professionalism, dedication to mission execution, and superior performance is a credit to the Nashville District, the region, and the Corps of Engineers.
