MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune personnel are invited to flex their muscles and put their bodies on display in the Marine Corps Community Services’ upcoming body-building competition.

MCCS held their first ‘Hard Corps’ body-building workshop, Feb. 6 aboard MCB Camp Lejeune to assist patrons interested in participating in the contest June 1.

The class taught the basic requirements for participating in a body-building competition.

“We wanted to give a brief overview of some of the poses and stances people will have to execute in a body-building contest,” said John Heger, the Area Two Fitness Center manager.

Heger explained many people who attended the workshop are new to body building. The first class covered the basics so attendees have an idea of what to learn.

Along with poses, Heger and Dennis Yeddo, a fitness facilities manager with MCCS, taught proper competition etiquette. Additional topics such as what kind of swimming suits are authorized and when to spray tan were also covered.

“When you’re on stage the spotlight is very bright,” said Heger. “It’s important to get a good, even spray tan because the darker you are, the more muscles will show in contrast to the light. People who have never competed in an event like this may not know it.”

MCCS hasn’t held a body-building competition on the installation since 1992, and the idea resurfaced when a group of Marines wanted to get in shape.

“There was a gunnery sergeant who wanted to hold a small body-building competition as a way to get his Marines to work out more, and stay within height and weight standards,” said Heger. “MCCS took hold of the idea, ran with it, and now here we are getting ready for our first one in years.”

Being a body builder is no easy feat. It goes well beyond the work just put in at the gym.

“What you do after you work out is just as important as what you do while you work out,” said Yeddo. “Working out tears the muscles. Proper rest and treatment after the exercise helps build them up.”

Yeddo explained one’s social life may also temporarily slow down.

“Friends won’t understand either,” he said. “They’ll want to go out on the weekends and drink, and you have to make the decision not to partake. One weekend out with friends can cause a major setback in body building. It may mean some quiet weekends, but it is all part of being physically disciplined. On the flipside, friends will love always having a designated driver they can rely on.”

Heger said he and Yeddo can offer workout and nutrition suggestions for those interested.

Interested patrons can contact the Area Two Fitness Center at 451-8209. The next scheduled ‘Hard Corps’ workshop is March 6 at 5 p.m. at the fitness center.
