CHIANG MAI PROVINCE, Kingdom of Thailand – Senior leaders from Thailand, the U.S., Singapore, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Indonesia and Malaysia attended a senior leader seminar Feb. 11-12, Chiang Mai province, Kingdom of Thailand, during exercise Cobra Gold 2013.

Discussions during the seminar centered on protection of civilians during conflict situations, coordinated communication, multinational and coalition operations, and interagency operations.

“It was a very excellent platform for all the participating nations to share their experiences in the various operations over the last few years,” said Singapore Armed Forces Brig. Gen. Chia Choon Hoong, commander, 9th Division, Ministry of Defense.

The shared experiences covered Indonesian peacekeeping operations, International Stabilization Forces’ missions, United Nations mandated security resolutions, joint task force support for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, and additional information required to exercise or execute a response to a large scale disaster.

“Our partners have significant planning and execution experience in these operations, and it was beneficial to learn how they operate in a multinational environment,” said U.S. Marine Brig. Gen. Richard L. Simcock, II, U.S. Pacific Command-designated executive agent senior military representative for CG 13 and deputy commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific.

CG 13, in its 32nd iteration, demonstrates the U.S. commitment to strengthening ties with its long-standing ally, the Kingdom of Thailand, and to improve regional partnership, prosperity and security in the Asia-Pacific region.

Exercise Cobra Gold is the largest multinational exercise in the Asia-Pacific region, providing more than 15 countries the opportunity to participate, attend as a part of a Multinational Planning Augmentation Teams or attend as a Coalition Observer Liaison Team. All opportunities are designed to build relationships, enhance interoperability and promote peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

“The senior leader seminar provided an excellent opportunity to learn from counterparts about real world peacekeeping and coalition operations.” said Simcock.
