MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. - Firefighters from Marine Corps Base Quantico Fire Departments attended the Drivers Training Branch’s course for Light Utility Vehicles at Camp Upshur on Friday.
The class spent an hour in the classroom, including taking a written test, before going out in the cold and driving the vehicles.
All the firefighters have experience with using the equipment during brush fires, but the training helped them learn more about the equipment and make sure safety is their No. 1 focus.
“The fire station has had the vehicles for a number of years,” said Kevin Dicky, captain/firefighter, MCB Quantico Fire Department.
“We need to make sure everyone knows everything about the vehicle and that we remember the safety features.”
The classroom session focused on the safety and characteristics of the vehicles.
“The first thing to remember is that these things can be dangerous,” said Carl Sergent, instructor, Drivers Training Branch.
“They will flip over easy and it should only be used off road.”
The fire department has been using LUVs for years to get the firefighters in remote areas to stop brush fires and to be more effective.
“We are able to operate longer because we aren’t having the firefighters carry all their gear out to the fires,” said Dicky.
The firefighters are mandated by the base to take the course, but Dicky says the firefighters would attend even if it wasn’t mandatory.
“It’s really beneficial to learn the limitations out here in a controlled session,” said Dicky. “It’s always a pleasure to come out here.”
