    48th Fighter Wing

The 48th Fighter Wing recently relocated records from building 1294 on the flightline to the 48th Communications Squadron building Jan. 14, 2013.

Prior to the move, the 48th CS was having trouble storing records within national archive records standards.

“It is a federal compliance that we have to store our records in a certain way, in a certain facility. There even has to be certain measurements,” said Master Sgt. Kenyu Barnes 48th Communication Squadron superintendent of knowledge operations. “To get building 1294 up to those standards would have cost us $825,000, so we found a way to circumvent.”

Before the move the method of locating and working on records was a much longer process and took more man-hours and manpower.

“Before we would have to go out to building 1294, locate the boxes, bring them back to the communications building, and work on them here, because the conditions out there were just not suitable,” said Barnes. “Now we can just do everything here.”

While saving time and money is considerable, there is great significance in the preservation of history.

“The most important piece of this whole thing is that we are able to preserve the unique history of Lakenheath,” said P.J. McConnell, 48th Communications Squadron chief of knowledge operations management. “The paper history of this base is in that room downstairs.”

It is essential to keep and properly house these records in suitable facilities so they can sustain the test of time.

McConnell said that getting to help people with any records issues one might have is rewarding.

“We had a first sergeant call us last summer, and he was missing one of his decorations from when he was an airman stationed here. We had the record, and were able to get that into his record and he ended up getting promoted,” said McConnell. “We went back 20 years, and we had record saying that yes, he did get his Achievement Medal here back when he was airman.”

The 48th CS not only gets the satisfying feeling of saving time, money and helping others, but also the productive feeling of safeguarding Air Force history.

“Records are so important,” said McConnell. “Even though you might not see it in your day-to-day business, behind the scenes people are working away diligently trying to preserve that piece of Lakenheath history.”
