NEW ORLEANS - Day in, day out, Marines do their part to ensure the overall mission of the Marine Corps is accomplished and mission readiness is maintained.
It might be the supply clerk staying late to inventory his warehouse gear or the administrative clerk coming in early to audit files or the platoon sergeant who takes his Marines out every Friday to help create a stronger unit bond. Among many things, Marines are known for mission accomplishment, but some do it better than others.
Throughout the year, there are numerous award competitions to recognize excellence and dedication in Marines, units, or even certain ranks.
Visit the MARADMINS page under the News tab on Marines.mil and type in “awards”; the page will populate with several announcements for different awards.
December alone offers 11 different Marine Administrative Messages announcing various awards from outstanding leadership to best sexual assault response program coordinator and more.
Award programs are available and it is up to Marines, leaders, and units to make themselves aware of which they are eligible for, and to compete for recognition of their exemplary performances.
There are award events for almost all military occupational specialties. For example: Marine Special Operations Command Marine of the Year Award, Musician of the Year Award and Marine Corps Intelligence Awards.
There are awards for programs, such as the Command Language Program of the Year Awards and community drug awareness awards.
There is an award for installation excellence, outstanding leadership, female leaders, enlisted Marines and Noncommissioned officers. The opportunities are plenty.
Chances are Marines – whether active-duty or Reserve, deployed or stateside, Private or Colonel, cook or infantryman – are eligible for some kind of award. The same goes for units and programs.
One noticeable thing is that almost all of the awards are held annually, usually around the same time period. This gives Marines and units ample time to prepare for next year and perform in accordance with high standards that would merit recognition.
Not only can recognition for outstanding work boost morale, but it can also serve as evidence of exemplary performance. Winning an award can be a good thing for Marines to include on their resumes or applications for jobs, in or out of the Marine Corps.
While award winners may receive trophies or plaques, they also can receive certificates of commendation from their unit or occupational field leaders. Not to be forgotten are the monetary prizes or equipment sometimes offered to winners. Unit recognition can provide inspiration and good old fashioned bragging rights as well.

and Sgt. Alvin Parson of Marine Forces Reserve for Military Photographer of the Year.
