    363rd Public Affairs Detachment

SPRINGFIELD, Mo – Soldiers with the 577th Transportation Detachment (Movement Control Team) participated in a farewell ceremony Jan. 5, before deploying in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The 557th MCT is deploying to Afghanistan to help with American base closures.

“We’re making sure all the moving parts get to the right places at the right time,” said Sgt. 1st Class Penny M. Chase, noncommissioned officer-in-charge, 557th Trans. Det.

The soldiers will be controlling the movement of equipment off American bases in Afghanistan. Any materials moved by truck in their area of operation will be controlled and directed by the unit
“Unless we do our job, no one has anything,” said Sgt. Michael L Snook, movement noncommissioned officer, 557th Trans. Det.

The 577th will train at Fort Hood, Texas, to continue to prepare for Afghanistan, however, the soldiers have already gotten some training under their belt. The unit has completed Humvee egress assistance training and combat lifesaver training. Additionally, many of the soldiers have prepared on the Battle Command Sustainment Support System which simulates the working conditions the soldiers will experience in country.

The training has been pulling the unit together as a group, said Snook, who is a volunteer assigned to the 557th from the 473rd Trans. Det. in Kansas City, Mo.

“The general atmosphere is really positive,” Snook said.

The unit has been training together in Springfield for the last four weeks and will continue to train together when they reach their mobilization site in Texas.

“I think the experience will be great,” said May. “We’re with good people.”

The command staff is equally positive about the coming deployment, citing the importance of their mission to success in Afghanistan.

“I am 100 percent positive we will fulfill our mission requirements,” said Capt. Chad Letterman, commander, 557th Trans. Det. “We already know the drill.”

“I expect it to be a successful deployment” said Chase. “We are instrumental in the draw-down.”
