KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan national police, assisted by coalition forces, discovered and destroyed a large weapons cache in the Arghandab and Shajoy districts, Zabul province July 20.
The combined forces were conducting a cordon and search operation in an area known as a militant leader meeting point and Taliban recruiting area in an effort to disrupt militant activities and secure the region.
Upon entering one of the small local villages, the Afghan-led joint force was engaged by militants using small-arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire. After positively identifying the enemy fighting positions, the partnered force responded with small arms and heavy weapons killing multiple militants.
A search of the area yielded a large weapons cache holding an estimated 7,000 pounds of explosives and other miscellaneous ammunition. The forces cleared civilians and the cache was destroyed in place.
One ANP member and two coalition members were wounded and treated before being evacuated to a nearby coalition hospital. There were no civilian casualties.
