KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan national security forces and International security assistance force troops conducted an operation in Baghran Valley, Helmand province, yesterday as part of efforts to target insurgent networks operating in Northern Helmand province.

During the operation ANSF and ISAF troops attempted to detain a group of people travelling in a vehicle in an isolated area North of Musa Qalah. During the operation a man who exited the vehicle and was posing a threat to ANSF/ISAF soldiers was shot and killed.

Upon subsequent investigation of the vehicle, soldiers found an additional person killed and one severely injured. Despite the immediate application of first aid by soldiers on the scene the injured person later died of wounds at the site. Whilst investigations are ongoing, it is believed that ricochets from warning shots, fired to halt the car, were responsible for the two deaths inside the vehicle.

"The death of a single innocent Afghan is a tragedy," said Capt. Mark Durkin, ISAF spokesperson. "ISAF values the lives of all people. A full investigation in cooperation with families and local authorities is being conducted."
