BAGHDAD— Dr. Nehad Al Joubory, Iraq's deputy minister of education, visited local schools in Ameriyah to assess ongoing school projects, Feb. 13.

Joubory, alongside Lt. Col. Monty Willoughby, commander of the 4th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, attached to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Multi-National Division – Baghdad, visited the Al Fardious and Al Rawadan school projects to gain an assessment on their progress; both schools are projected to open in March.

"The school openings will provide a viable and capable facility where the children of Iraq can continue their education," said Capt. Kelly Lanphere, civil military operations officer, 4-10 Cav. Regt.

The deputy minister discussed issues with the contractor in charge of rebuilding the schools while Afrah, the head engineer in charge of school projects for the ministry of education, inspected the jobsites of both schools.

One of Joubory's main goals, he said, is to ensure that all schools in the Baghdad area, as well as within Iraq, are equipped with enough computers to combat a growing computer illiteracy problem, adding that he feels that it is a growing problem and wants to focus more time and money on its resolution – even if it means cutting costs in other areas.

The deputy minister said he was very pleased with the progress of the ongoing projects and with MND-B for its help in the renovation of the schools.
