AS SAMAWAH, Iraq – A common meeting place set up by Coalition Forces at Command Out Post/ Joint Security Site 6 in this remote area of Southern Iraq is cultivating unity between these forces, Iraqi Security Forces and local Iraqis.

As the troops from 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division patrol across Muthanna Province, they spread an invitation for community leaders to discuss issues not only with Coalition Forces, but also with their fellow Iraqis. Previous meetings at the COP/JSS have included key leaders from the Iraqi Highway Police, Turkish Cement Plant, Al Jubur, Al Ruiyah, and the Al Borcot tribes.

The meeting hosts have been well received by their Iraqi neighbors.

In every village they visit, troopers from COP/JSS 6 hear a common theme: "Iraqis had not seen Americans come into their villages in over four years and we are glad you're here," said Capt. Mike Donahue, commander of Company C, 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

With all of the local sheiks, village elders and ISF at the COP/JSS it gives everyone the benefit of meeting and discussing issues or concerns together rather than only one-on-one encounters, thus promoting an environment of communication, trust and partnership.
