Engineers Improve Range Safety

Spc. Donald Welch, of Shelbyville, Ind., and Spc. Allan Beck, of San Bernardino, Calif., both with the 46th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy), 225th Engineer Brigade, position a target stand in front of the range wall. The engineers rebuilt six target stands and 18 firing positions in addition to making safety upgrades to the range.

Rory Mann, 46th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy), 225th Engineer Brigade, from Wasilla, Alaska, and Spc. Allan Beck, of San Bernardino, Calif., unload a load of fill dirt for the HESCOs. Over 125 20-ton truck loads of earth were brought in from outside Combat Outpost Meade to make this mission happen.

A 2.5-cubic yard bucket loader operated by Spc. Donald Welch, 46th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy), a heavy equipment operator from Shelbyville, Ind., removes the dirt from the earthen berm that is covering the older, smaller HESCO barriers. With the berm removed, another set of HESCOs are placed and filled with earth to create a safer firing base.
