Pfc. David K. Branch, heavy equipment operator, 46th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy), 225th Engineer Brigade, a native of Gulf Port, Miss., uses a large bulldozer to straighten out a 20-foot berm. A berm is an earthen wall used in fortification applications and the ones being built for the Rawandan Palace Complex test fire pit will provide additional side protection when rounds are fired into the test pit.

Engineers Improve Force Protection for Coalition Forces at Rawandan Palace Complex

Pfc. Mario Quinones, heavy equipment operator, earth moving platoon, 46th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy), a native of Guayanilla, Puerto Rico, uses a bucket loader to dig a test fire pit June 28 at Rawandan Palace Complex here. Quinones used the loader to remove over 100 cubic yards of earth which was so much dirt it filled up seven large 20-ton dump trucks. The removed earth was then used to fill the HESCO Bastions that surrounded the test fire pit.

Sgt. Ross Maki, 46th Engineer Combat Battalion, 225th Engineer Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Multi-National Division – Baghdad, from Lake Linden, Mich., utilizes the loader and chains to yank jersey barriers from a trailer for disposal in the barrier yard. The engineers worked with their Iraqi partners to remove the barriers; allowing for better access in the more stable Baghdad environment.
