Rct. Karen Rubio, Platoon 4037, Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, sprints toward the finish line of a 1 1/2-mile run during an initial strength test Aug. 9, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. The minimum physical fitness requirements on the IST for female recruits to begin training are 44 crunches in two minutes, a 12-second flexed-arm hang and a 1 1/2-mile run in 15 minutes. Rubio, 19, from El Paso, Texas, is scheduled to graduate Nov. 1, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
