First Lt. Mark Hernandez of 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, was honored as a Fort Riley volunteer of the quarter at a ceremony July 30. Hernandez was recognized for a food drive he organized dubbed “Operation Destroy Hunger.” Hernandez got the soldiers of his regiment involved and was able to donate 2,283 pounds of food in May to the Geary County Food Pantry located in Junction City, Kan. Hernandez, a San Antonio native, who is no stranger to volunteering, organized the food drive which focused on collecting food items for children of low-income families who will be affected during the summer months when children are missing the meals provided to them by schools.
