Rct. Kristin Toler, a 20-year-old native of New Bern, N.C., is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Toler is training with Platoon 4024, Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate Aug. 2, 2013. “I joined the Marine Corps to be part of something elite … something bigger than myself. I was in the Young Marine Program from the age of 10, and it really geared my interest toward the military, toward the Marine Corps. I chose the Marine Corps because … you earn more respect. It’s the hardest boot camp. The challenges make me a better person. It gives me more confidence and more motivation to strive and be better at everything I do,” said Toler. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
