Lance Cpl. Tyler Slim, rifleman and radio operator, 1st Platoon, Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, Marine Rotational Force – Darwin, and a Tuba City, Ariz., native, calls in a radio check, here, May 8. Slim’s grandfather, or Cheii, Navajo for grandfather, served as a code talker in the Marine Corps, a group of Native-American Marines who used the Navajo language to transmit secret tactical information using radios during war time. Hearing Cheii’s stories of his time in the Corps played a part in Slim’s decision to enlist.
