Retired Lt. Cmdr. Jim Hickerson talks to sailors and airmen about his experience as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War at a POW event held at the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Memorial Chapel. In 1967 Hickerson was on an air mission when his aircraft was hit by a surface-to-air missile and he was forced to eject. He spent nearly six years as a POW experiencing torture and deprivation by the North Vietnamese. Upon returning home, he continued his naval career until retiring with 30 years of service. The POW event was hosted by Rear Adm. Frank Ponds, commander, Navy Region Hawaii and Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, and presented by the Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions, Junior Enlisted Association and Chiefs of the Waterfront.
