U.S. Air Force Maj. Matthew Spears, commander of the Aviation Detachment 1, 52nd Operations Group, briefs nearly 100 students from the Zespol school district on the recent activation of the aviation detachment during a community outreach day at Powidz Air Base, Poland, March 8, 2013. The aviation detachment was activated in October 2012 after a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Polish Defense Minister authorizing a U.S. continued presence in the region. More than 60 U.S. Military personnel and aircraft from Ramstein Air Base, Germany, was in Poland to support Exercise Screaming Eagle V, a bilateral exercise promoting defense ties in the spirit of the 2008 U.S.-Polish Declaration on Strategic Cooperation.
