Refugee, now US soldier returns home

First Lt. Yllka Cana, a military intelligence officer deployed with the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, helps pass out colored pencils and art supplies to children at an elementary school in Livic, Gjilane, Kosovo. The school is one that Cana attended prior to leaving Kosovo for the U.S. "Growing up in a war-torn country one truly understands the pain and hardship that people experience, especially children," said Cana. "The experience growing up here made me want to join the military. I always wanted to be that person that went to a school and helped someone else, because 14 years ago I was on the other side, I was that kid who needed gloves. I know first-hand how much it means." • First Lt. Sean Brookshire, a Black Hawk pilot deployed to Kosovo as part of Multinational Battle Group-East, talks with some of the students he has worked with since the beginning of his deployment. For the last five rotations, soldiers have partnered with a local school to help sponsor students who plan to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language exam. Brookshire said it was a great experience working with the kids, and getting to know the people of Kosovo. "It's fun, being able to see them grow throughout the course," he said. "But I have also learned that teaching is more about preparation, and what you put into it. As long as you care about the kids, and you want them to do well on the test, you can teach it."
