Lt. Col. Samuel Smith, the commanding officer of Marine Attack Squadron 513, prepares to take off from the flightline at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz. to Japan to attach to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, Dec. 3. The Harriers took off Dec. 3, with Smith heading the pack. He pithily summarized his feelings on leading the Nightmares overseas one last time: “I’m proud of this unit,” he said. “I’m proud of the Nightmares.”
