First Day in the big leagues

U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Michael S. Linnington, commander, Joint Task Force -National Capital Region, speaks with members of the media during a newcomer's orientation, Nov. 15, 2012, at Joint Base Myer - Henderson Hall. The newcomer's orientation provided new members of the staff an overview of JTF-NCR missions and responsibilities throughout the Washington D.C. area, and allowed them a first-hand look at what was expected of them as part of JTF-NCR's ceremonial support to the 57th Presidential Inauguration. JTF-NCR is a joint force command, comprised of members of all five of the United States armed services, coordinates the ceremonial support activities of the more than 5,000 service members slated to take part in the Presidential Inaugural Parade and other events during the 2013 Inauguration Week.
The tradition of U.S. military participation in inaugural events started April 30, 1789, when members of the U.S. Army, local militia units and Revolutionary War veterans escorted George Washington to his first inauguration ceremony at Federal Hall in New York City.
