Spc. Michael Winkelman II, all wheel vehicle mechanic, 401st Quartermaster Detachment, Lock Haven, Pa., monitors the performance of a 600 gallon per minute pump Nov. 7 as it pumps water out of the Redfern Housing complex, Rockaway, N.Y. Residents at the complex have been without power since Hurricane Sandy hit the northeast last week. Despite the effects of a second large storm, citizen-soldiers removed water from three buildings at the complex. The unit deployed into the area in direct support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, state and local officials.
