The best soldiers for the worst moments: Medevac flies day or night

U.S. Army Spc. Bryan Heaston, 30, of Lusby, Md., observes the Afghan countryside from a UH-60 Black Hawk medevac helicopter July 8. Heaston, a medevac crew chief, is on his first deployment, currently working on Forward Operating Base Shank, supporting Task Force Corsair, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade. "All that jazz they talk about in training, we see it every day," said Heaston. "How they tell you someday you're going to have to rely on your buddies, and this is why you need to stay fit. Guys hauling their injured and bleeding buddies. An hour earlier, they didn't think they'd be in a medevac, but here they are."
