A detail of U.S. Marines with Regimental Combat Team 5 march with a birthday cake during a ceremony held in celebration of the 5th Marine Regiment’s 95th birthday here, June 11, 2012. The regiment holds the honor of being the Marine Corps most decorated regiment. Since it’s activation in June 1917, the “Fighting Fifth,” the regiment’s nickname earned during World War I, has fought in every major American engagement, from the Battle of Belleau Wood, the U.S. Pacific Campaign against Japan, the defense of the Pusan Perimeter, the seizure of Hue during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam, the liberation of Kuwait, led the attack during the opening stages of Operation Iraqi Freedom, fought insurgents in Iraq for three years, and to today’s continuing counterinsurgency operations in southern Helmand.
