Takahiro Odaira, an advisor with the Shizuoka Prefecture's Disaster Planning Office on mainland Japan, marks the area for the upcoming summer disaster relief drill, the Tokai Earthquake Scenario, to Marines of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit here, June 11. Following the 31st MEU’s pivotal role in the relief efforts during Operation Tomodachi last year, Shizuoka Prefecture's disaster planning office wanted to know more about the MEU’s capabilities for future disaster integration. Five planners from the Disaster Planning Office met with command element Marines of the 31st MEU to discuss Operation Tomodachi, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief training, and the MEU’s seamless integration with the Navy during deployments. The 31st MEU is the only continuously forward-deployed MEU and is the nation’s force in readiness in the Asia-Pacific region.
