U.S. Navy Cmdrs. Peter T. Mirisola, left, the commanding officer of the guided missile frigate USS Underwood (FFG 36) and Michael D. Brasseur, the ship's executive officer, discuss preparations for the next phase of Unitas 53 Pacific (PAC) May 20, 2012, aboard the ship in the Pacific Ocean while the Chilean navy maritime zone patrol boat Comandante Toro (OPV 82) sits anchored nearby. Underwood was representing the U.S. Navy in support of Unitas 53 PAC and Southern Seas 2012. Unitas, Latin for "unity," is an annual U.S. Southern Command-sponsored, multinational naval exercise designed to enhance security cooperation and improve coalition operations between South American and U.S. maritime forces. Southern Seas is a U.S. Southern Command-directed operation designed to strengthen relationships with regional partner nations and improve operational readiness for all assigned units.
