U.S. sailors with the guided missile frigate USS Underwood (FFG 36) maneuver a rigid hull inflatable boat during exercises with service members from Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru as part of Unitas 53 Pacific May 17, 2012, in Salinas Bay, Peru. Underwood was representing the U.S. Navy in support of Unitas 53 PAC and Southern Seas 2012. Unitas, Latin for "unity," is an annual U.S. Southern Command-sponsored, multinational naval exercise designed to enhance security cooperation and improve coalition operations between South American and U.S. maritime forces. Southern Seas is a U.S. Southern Command-directed operation designed to strengthen relationships with regional partner nations and improve operational readiness for all assigned units.
