Australian Army Lt. Col. Stewart Graham (left), Australian Army Joint Operations Command, and U.S. Army Maj. Curtis Armstrong, U.S. Army, Pacific, Contingency Command Post, converse prior to an exercise academics session at Camp Aguinaldo, Philippines, April 19. They are taking part in a combined-joint command post exercise focusing on combined-force planning and response to a disaster relief scenario, one part of the larger Exercise Balikatan 2012. About 20 soldiers from USARPAC and 13 from U.S. Army-Japan participated in the CPX as the U.S. Army forces command element. BK12 takes place from April 16-27, on Luzon and Palawan, Republic of the Philippines. Combined Philippine and U.S. service members also conducted a series of humanitarian civic assistance projects and field training exercises. Balikatan is a Filipino word meaning “shoulder-to-shoulder” and characterizes the spirit of the exercise.
