Electronics Technician 1st Class Travis Hill, from Monessen, Pa., assigned to the combat systems department aboard the littoral combat ship USS Independence (LCS 2), prepares a fuel contamination test, normally conducted by Sailors in an engineering rate. Due to the small size of the engineering department aboard Independence, Sailors from other departments and rating specialties obtain qualifications to support evolutions such as fuel contamination tests. Independence's Gold Crew and embarked Mine Countermeasures (MCM), Detachment 1 are underway for the ship's maiden voyage to San Diego.
